Question by kmll2: What is similar and what is different about these 2 statements & how they relate to the theme of fame & glory?
These two statements are from “The Epic Of Gilgamesh” and “The Iliad”. Both of them are talking about death, and im trying to figure out whats similar and different about these statements. Here is Enkidu’s statement:

Enkidu confessed this dream to Gilgamesh: “The gods all gathered round last night and Anu told Enlil that one of us should die because of what we’ve done against their names. Though Shamash intervened for us, saying we had slain Humbaba and the bull with his consent, the others sought revenge.” Then Enkidu soon lost full strength. Saying worlds like these as his friend lay dying, Gilgamesh intoned: “Why should you be so condemned and why should i go right on living? Will my own sad eyes soon never look onn you again? Shall i descend to depths beneath this earth to visit worlds reserved for those who’ve died?” Enkidu glances up, addressing the entryway on which his hand was morbidly crushed: “Door of all forests, that confuses wind and rain, deaf, dumb, and blind and portal: I admired your firm texture before i first saw the mighty trees aloft that gave Force to you. There is nothing on earth that could replace your splendor or your worth. At two hundred feet in height, at forty feet around are your mighty posts, you priceless hinge cut and crafted in Nippur’s holy ground. If i had guessed that you’d become I would have shattered you to pieces with my ax and have been more careful not tot wound my had to badly on your frame”
Then Enkidu says to Gilgamesh, “Oh gilgamesh, some destiny has robbed me of the honor fixed for those who die in battle. I lie now in slow disgrace, withering day by day, deprived as I am of the peace that comes to on who dies in a swift clash of arms”

Now this is Achilles statement from “The Iliad”
“Yes my dear mother, the Olympian (zeus) has done all that for me. But what good do i get of all that now, if my dear friend patroclus is dead? i cared more for him than all of my companions, as much as for my own life. He is lost! my armour is Hector’s! Hector killed him, Hector stript off that miraculous armour, that Beautiful armour, that wonder of wonders, which the gods gave to peleus on the day they layed you in the bed with a mortal. I wish you had gone on living with your immortal sisters of the sea, and peleus had married a mortal wife! But now- it was all to bring a thousand sorrows on you too, for your son’s death! You will never have me back, again, I shall never go home- for i have no desire myself to live and remain among men, unless I may kill Hector first with my own spear and make him pay the death-price for Patroclus..”
“But i will let bygones be bygones, although I am indignant; I will rule my temper because I must. Now I will go and find the destroyer of that dear life, Hector! Fate I will welcome whenever Zeus and all gods may choose to bring it. Not even the might Heracles escaped fate, and he was one that Lord Zeus Cronion loved best of all; yes, fate brought him low and the implacable anger of Hera. So with me; if a like fate has been ordained for me, there i shall lie when i am dead but now may i win a ggloriousname! May they know that I have been long away from the battle! May i bring sobs and groaning to some wives of Troy and Dardania, and tears to their tender cheeks, which they shall wipe away with both hands! Don’t try to keep me from the battle; you love me, I know, but you shall never persuade me.

I can’t comment on fame and glory, but both quotes reveal the character’s beliefs about courage and valor in the face of war. The one feels he is denied a “hero’s death”, while the other has someone counseling him to hold back and stay out of the fray for perhaps selfish reasons.
